MPS Newton 8 - 0 Cambridge

We had an easy victory on Sunday which, on the evidence of the first 20 minutes, had looked unlikely. We struggled to find our shape in the early exchanges, and had difficulty stringing two or three passes together.

Mid-way through the first half our play began to improve and then chances followed in steady succession. Our first goal came following a high cross from the right that the Cambridge 'keeper only got his fingertips to, sending the ball to the left side of the box. Steve Gans turned it back in, and the 'keeper again got his fingers to the cross but spilled the ball as he fell. Victor was waiting close by and stepped forward to stab the ball across the line. A couple of minutes later Steve Gans again crossed in from the left, lower this time, and Samuel guided the ball into the right side of the net.

Cambridge almost pulled a goal back when a low shot was half blocked by Mike Altchek. The ball looped over the head of Mike Orscheln, who had advanced to close the angle, but he managed to scamper back and scoop the ball out before it crossed the line.

Our third goal was simplicity: John played a low pass cross-field from behind the half-way line to Bardot on the right, who carried it into the box and squared for Samuel to tap in. For us this was a mediocre first-half, but we still found ourselves three goals to the good.

To their credit, Cambridge started the second half in an attacking formation, but that left gaping holes at the back. Each of our second-half goals was relatively unpressured. The first of the half, and fourth of the match, came when Tim Todreas and Karsten found themselves with the ball between them at the top of the box, and Tim hooked it past the advancing goalkeeper.

Five-nil was a simply worked move: Tim Todreas played out square to Ivan at the half-way line, he pushed it forward to Christer who passed it into Karsten's path as he beat the offside trap, rounded the 'keeper and tapped home. Forget triangles: we play in squares. Karsten then picked up his second goal of the game when he made a diagonal run, picked up Ivan's pass, turned his defender and fired a shot between the 'keeper's legs.

Next up for a brace was Christer, who ran onto a long ball, lobbed the 'keeper outside the area and scored into an empty net. Shortly afterwards he cut across the top of the box and curled a lovely shot into the top corner.

There were many, many chances that didn't hit the target. In the first half Steve Shea hit the crossbar but had been called offside, and Christer shot narrowly wide of the left post after Bardot had put him through. In the second, Pete Bradley skinned the right post with a low shot, and Ivan, running in from the right, popped a couple of shots just wide of the far post.

We've now scored as many goals as we did in the whole of last season. Onwards to the battle of the big boots, against Shake-Shake next weekend.
