We continued our good form in Sunday's game at Wenham. There had been some concern that the field would be unplayable after Saturday's heavy rainfall. While not quite a quagmire, it was certainly the heaviest pitch we've played on this season.
Judging by previous results, Wen Ham United were unlikely to be a push-over: they'd only won a single point from their previous four games, but all the results looked close. Surprisingly, then, they offered us little resistance, giving us all space and lots of time on the ball, which we put in the net a total of ten times.
Our goal-fest started with a brace from Andy: Christer played a pass behind the central defender for him to run onto, and he calmly slotted the ball past the 'keeper. Shortly afterwards Steve G collected a partial clearance on the left side of the area and played a smart short pass to Andy who drilled in a low shot from a central position.
Our third goal was a zig-zag affair that utilised all the space we were given. Christer played a pass from the left side of midfield to Bardot on right, he crossed to the back post, where Steve S rose and headed across the goal into the right corner of the net.
Karsten made a strong run through the middle, side-stepped a defender and struck a good low shot that hit the inside of the post and rebounded across the face of the goal. Shortly afterwards he made a similar but shorter run, then curled in a shot from the edge of the area to put us four ahead.
Other first-half chances included Andy shooting from the right 35 yards out when the 'keeper was out of position, only to see the ball skim wide of the left post. Bardot was played through the centre behind the defence and simply tapped the ball past the advancing 'keeper, but was adjudged offside. And Samuel was played through by Andy's pass, but despite some deft footwork - including, if I'm not mistaken, a Ronaldo stepover - he couldn't find an angle to get in a shot.
The second half wasn't long under way before the fifth goal was scored. This time it was Tim T playing the defence splitter, threading the ball into the path of Bardot, who hammered a shot over the 'keeper's shoulder and into the net.
Goal six was nicely worked: Andy received the ball in some space on the right flank, ran towards the bye-line and hit in a hard low cross. Victor stole ahead of his defender and poked the ball home from 5 yards. There was a short lull before goal seven, when Steve S played a short corner to Bardot, lurking on the right edge of the area. He took one touch to steady himself then hit a thunderbolt high into the left side of the goal.
Wenham then gave away a free-kick about 35 yards out from their goal. While the defence argued with the referee about the decision, Andy (I think) played the kick quickly to Karsten who ran through and scored. The ref awarded a goal but after protest from Wenham about what they considered an ambiguous signal, he decided to replay the free kick. At seven goals up we could afford not to argue that decision. We didn't have to wait long for the eighth goal in any case: Christer rounded out an excellent game with a good run in from the left, and scored with a low shot through the 'keeper's legs.
Other second-half highlights included Andy narrowly missing his hat-trick with a shot from all of 40 yards; Ivan's low drilled shot from Bardot's pass that the 'keeper saved with his chin; and a couple of good runs by Mike A that ended with shots clipped just over the bar.
This was a good game for our goal difference, but it's back to business as usual next weekend against Weston.
